Moana - Disneycember

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ธ.ค. 2018
  • A young adventurer tries to save the world, been there done that, but Moana might have enough charm to ride these waves of cliché.

Moana, is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 56th Disney animated feature film. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, co-directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the film introduces Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and features the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger, and Alan Tudyk.

I hate Moana. I wanted to love it, I was ready to love it, but everyone made such a big thing of pitting it against Frozen and that just made me hate what turned out to be a film I didn't enjoy. Frozen is a film that personally means a lot to me. I know Frozen probably isn't technically as good as Tangled but that doesn't stop me from loving Frozen more for all that it means for me. Moana I felt was a bad movie. I was bored. I thought it was badly written and I hated the music and the chicken sidekick (I have since given my plush of this chicken to my dog and she's done a great job of mauling the thing, which has been therapeutic for me). I also hated The Rock. He's not famous here in the UK so this was my introduction to him, and from everything I'd ever seen of him he seemed like an arrogant idiot. I was hoping as Maui he'd prove me wrong but he proved me right. And I have a visual impairment so make the animation look as good as you want, it won't make much difference to someone who can hardly see her TV.
But Frozen, that came to me at probably the lowest point in my life. Not least of all I had a near death experience that year and it was the day I watched Frozen when I decided that I was glad I'd survived. I felt like maybe my grandfather (who died that year) had sent it from the heavens to give me hope beyond my life struggling with mental health. If not my grandfather I don't know but sometimes I like to think it was him. I just know, if I could be brave and strong like Elsa then... Wow. That's honestly all I want in life. Frozen just gave me hope when I needed it the most. And when I listen to Idina Menzel sing, when I see the sisters hug at the end, it makes me feel, makes me believe that I can fight my illness. It empowers me. So even if Tangled, even if Moana or any other film is better, Frozen will always be invaluable for all it has given me.
Now if I could only be brave enough to watch it again in hopes that the magic is still there.

I'm with Critic on this one. Watching this for the first time felt like checking off Disney Princess Story boxes. What was the point of the coconut things? You could completely take them out of the movie with no impact to the story. The crab thingy? Yeah, that could go too, and you wouldn't miss much. Just find the hook on another island somewhere.
I understand this movie is based on some grand, epic Polynesian myths, but as a Disney movie, it doesn't work. Hercules is also based on a grand myth, but the parts that needed telling without focus were given in a montage or are background elements (Nemian lion, Caledonian boar, etc) while the main focus is on Hercules, his growth, and his relationships with Meg, Phil, Pegasus, and Zeus. It didn't do as well in the box office (there were definitely some strange creative choices) and it pissed off a lot of Greek mythology fans, but it was a more complete story.

To be fair maui was banished at the island for like centuries. But also, it’s so nice to see a movie to have tahitian culture. I rarely get to see fantasy settings with non western worlds. like Mulan didn’t really go into the huge world of han Chinese monsters and myths. This movie isn’t perfect but man is the mythology and art beautiful and that’s what brings it home to me

This is the movie that made me start to see a pattern with Disney's latest female main characters.
Pretty, short, young, naive to the world but has big dreams meets a cool, cynical, been around the block before, tall guy who doesn't think she's all that smart at first but eventually they get under each other's skin and grow to respect each other. Sometimes it's romantic, sometimes it's platonic.
    Rapunzel/Flynn, Ana/Kristof, Judy/Nick, Moana/Maui
Don't get me wrong, I like these films and there are worse character dynamics to have for sure, but let's shake things up a bit with our female leads.

I hated pretty much every post-2012 Disney animated features, because how obsessed with being "sUbVeRsIvE" and "sHoCkInG" and "UnExPecTeD" they are, coming off just as disingenuous shit. This one, while still falling in that category on many things, was at least serviceable.
It starts off strong, but gets weaker and weaker after Moana finds Maui. Too much plot armor and convenience around Moana herself. Tamatoa, who everyone praises for not being a shitty Scooby Doo villain, is nothing more than a glorified David Bowie spoof with zero screentime. A Big Lipped Alligator Moment, if you will....
And this movie started the new trend of the "Villain is inside the hero" trope. Maui is the cause of Te Fiti turning into Te Ka because of his pride, in WiR2 Ralph is the cause of the virus that almost destroys the Internet because he didn't want to leave Vanellope. If that's case, screw you guys, I'm going home. This shit is boring. And lowkey sexist.
Still, Moana was serviceable, but far from one of Musker and Clements' bests.

What I do like about this film that Doug seemed to have glossed over a little due to it being something he didn't like, is that she WANTED to stay home and go out to sea at the same time. That's why she was torn at the start, she wanted to be who her people needed her to be, but she also wanted to leave for a while. Thankfully she was able to do both.

Mulan is in the official line up as she meets a requirement that was made for her as the point of the Disney princesses was to create female characters for young children to connect with, love, look up to and gakkn that essence of magic and wonder from. Mulan performed a heroic act, a criteria made for her to be in there as of all the princesses she is the one to look up to the most. Her intentions were the purist, she wished to save her father, none of her actions were for her own gain. Even her humble ending in turning down the job offer from the emperor, her intentions were always for the love and respect to her family. So of course she should be in a group of women children should be exposed to.

They always talk about all the “firsts” Frozen did (even though it wasn’t the first to do anything), but Moana was the first to not have a love interest, the first to not have a direct villain, and the first Disney Princess to be of Polynesian decent. All your opinions are 100% valid but it deserves a tiny bit more credit than it received.

I will say it, I was not a fan of Moana .It was a lazy retelling of to 90's Pocahontas with a very jumbled story that did not add up and characters that literally repeated the same trope the whole time. Even the "villain" thing made no sense. It was a loving sentient grassy knoll that didn't want to lose its rock. For if it did it would kill everyone slowly? What? Ugh. And don't even get me started on how the Rock's character literally flies away for no reason during the climax. . . I would rather see Lilo and Stitch for my Island movie fix..

One thing I like about Maui's story is revealing this him stealing the Heart if Te Fiti wasn't a move done in arrogance as it was portrayed at the beginning of the movie. It reveals that he stole it because he felt it would make mankind happy, showing that at the end of it all even though he acts all arrogant, everything he does is for the betterment of mankind. Yeah he cause the problems but he learned his lesson and his motives weren't all that bad.

According to the Disney Princesses wiki page, a character can only be classified as a princess by being born royal, married to royalty, or considered a 'princess' due to a significant portrayal of heroism. So that explains Moana and Mulan.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this movie as pretty generic. The soundtrack is phenomenal as well as the animation, but the dumb rooster was ANNOYING and the Rock as Maui just wasn't doing it for me. But Tamatoa is a rare example of a NON-TWIST villain with a villain SONG. I mean geez, it's been forever since we've gotten one of those.

If I had to rank the current generation of Disney Princesses (including Tiana, but not Penelope since I have never watched Wreck-It Ralph movies) based on their movies it be this-
    4. Frozen- Even though Elsa is my 2nd fav out of all the Disney Princesses (only Mulan beats her), this movie is honestly hard for me to watch through because of her struggles. I am glad I watched this movie and it's great, but because out of the 4 I skip the most parts out of it, I rank it 4th.
    3. Moana- Yeah the humor in this was lacking but otherwise it was a good movie. My fav part was when Moana's grandmother's spirit visit her. That made me tear up because it reminded me of my relationship with my late grandmother.
    2. The Princess and the Frog- Out of the princesses Tiana for me is the weakest, but I still like her. For me I just felt she was too narrow-minded at times. Rest of the chars I liked, especially Tiana's best friend Charlotte (who's on my list of fav Disney Good Female Chars).
    1. Tangled- Even though this movie is first out these four, I still doubt it make my Top 10 Fav Disney movies because of one major moment in the movie that I just didn't like, even though I could see it coming. It is the funniest of the 4 for me though and omg that reunion at the end just got me. I am a sucker for family reunions.

The reasons that Critic hates this movie is the reasons i _love_ this movie. The cliches that he listed are the hook (hehehe) the reeled me in
Also, i also love that Moana is one of the more active, non-selfish Disney princesses that we have.
Moana did want to go to the ocean but she does acknowledges her position as future chief and relents to her responsibilities.
Also, i really love that she is aggressive in her quest but she's not above asking for help.
Think about it. She asked her dad and Maui for help. But when they don't, she says "Fuck it" and moves forward. Seriously, how hardcore is that?

Can't speak on Polynesian myths but lots of legends are full of flawed characters so Maui feels legit to me. Not evil just misguided and they give you a reason for his mistake how he genuinely did it to please the people. His arc isn't just wrapped up by an apology it's his choice to sacrifice everything in order to help Moana.

Ok Doug it’s not all Maui’s fault. When Moana confronts Te Ka she says “THEY have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you.” She’s not talking about Maui she’s talking about the humans. Maui was just trying to please them so he could be loved for once in his life.

I actually loved the fact that Moana kept on seeming like she was waiting for the man (Maoi) to save the day, and the whole show sort of lines up with that theory, the guy will save the day, this big strong man and yet he doesn't, its Moana who saves the day and not the way you thought she would. She does it by being true to herself. She was played as a very strong woman in her own right throughout the movie, telling Maoi to save the day, trying to push him to do what he needs to do in order to save the world, but she was trying hard to just be the backstage hand to who she thought would be able to make everything right. It was amazing seeing just how she showed that just being true to herself, she was able to do it herself (with a little help from Maoi).
As for Maoi not growing, he does seem to grow with Moana, learning to be just a little more humble but you have to remember that he is a god. All his life he was pretty much full of himself so it takes much more then one thing to make him change all the way. I liked that his change is more slow going.

I feel conflicted on whether to choose Moana or Tangled, because I love both. But I love the tropical aesthetic and the various events going on in Moana. I'm love that the parents aren't dead and I am so happy that Moana and Maui didn't become love interest because I see no purpose in the existence of such happening. I love that inanimate nature is sentient. I was actually mildly surprised that the villain was the good guy because we got insight about these characters but didn't have much connection other than being opposing sides. I like unexpected twists like that (Unexpected to me, at least). But I wish there was more screen time about the villain in general to show more of how threatening he was, but I'm neutral about it.

Moana ditches the cliche of the fairy tale love story without being all, "look at me! We're so clever!" about it. It's a pure hero's journey for a woman that isn't preachy about what it is. Her grandmother asks her who she is and she defines herself both as part of her history and as an individual and in that moment discovers her power is her will and not destiny.
    "[Gramma Tala:]
I know a girl from an island
She stands apart from the crowd
She loves the sea and her people
She makes her whole family proud
Sometimes the world seems against you
The journey may leave a scar
But scars can heal and reveal just
    Where you are
The people you love will change you
The things you have learned will guide you
And nothing on earth can silence
The quiet voice still inside you
And when that voice starts to whisper
    "Moana, you've come so far"
Moana listen, do you know who you are?
    Who am I?
I am a girl who loves my island
And the girl who loves the sea, it calls me
I am the daughter of the village chief
    We are descended from voyagers
Who found their way across the world
    They call me
I've delivered us to where we are
    I have journeyed farther
I am everything I've learned and more
    Still it calls me
And the call isn't out there at all
    It's inside me
    It's like the tide
    Always falling and rising
I will carry you here in my heart
    You'll remind me
    That come what may
    I know the way
    I am Moana

Moana is what I wanted from Frozen. I wanted a big adventure with grand worlds! And the movie was just about depressed queen running away from her responsibilities.
And don't get me wrong, I LOVE Frozen, but it still was a little bit of a let down. I expected the same adventure as from the soviet "Ice Queen". This movie was BIG! Especially for a little me, it still gives me chills! But yeah, we have what we have.
Moana, on the other hand, was everything I wanted to see from Frozen. Big funny adventure against evil (which wasn't even a true evil and it was an amazing twist), great characters and environments, great songs! It was amazing!
All in all, I like both of this movies, but Moana connects to me the most.

+Ricardo Ortiz-Joseph Yes; fifty five years _after_ the movie in which he died. I think it would be a stretch to call his death a "Disney cliche". Even if I conceded your point, that's still only two examples. Hardly enough to make a trend worthy of Doug's hatred.

Out of: frozen, tangled and moana, my favourite film is moana. All because of Tamatoa

Man, this just made me realize it's been a while since I last saw this movie and I want to see it again. One thing that I really loved about this move is how beautiful it was. It still amazes me every time I watch it, and I agree completely with what you have to say here. The cliches in Frozen were not my cup of tea, but I don't mind the ones in Moana because I feel they're more fresh. Great way to put it!

I liked Moana well enough but it felt really short to me, as if it was missing something. Out of the three he mentioned I liked Tangled the most, it was overall more charming to me.

The cliches he was talking about how much he was sick of
For a second I thought, are you talking about Star Wars

Moana isn't bad at all, but I just think it's kind of forgettable. It feels like it's trying to be innovative like Tangled and Frozen, but it feels trapped in the classic Disney Princess pitfalls those other films largely managed to avoid. Plus, the ocean is such a big ex machina that it takes you out of the movie. None of the plot had to happen if the sea just gave the gem back. It's still beautiful, has great music (How Far I'll Go tries to hard to be Let It Go though). It also does a remarkable job of portraying race, especially when you consider how problematic Disney has handled race in even some of it's classics. I just think it doesn't live up to the standard Disney's set since Tangled.

I dunno, I liked this one better than Frozen and Tangled and felt that it did a lot more correctly again. Many of the songs at the beginning don't just appear, they carry the story forward in a way that feels natural. Maui and Moana's characters learn a lot and grow a lot through the story, and I LOVED that this culture was represented in a more accurate and historic way that had almost never been done much before. It just felt so much more fresh to me.
