I never liked batman. that movie should deserve a place in the worst top 5 instead of mars attack. And worst thing it kinda spreaded like a cancer. Movies trying to emulate it popped out everywhere.

Burton is like the best & worst thing to happen to Batman with Batman Returns being my favourite movie (of all- C&B!). Then he didn't keep a grip on it & end up in Bat & Robin! Does glow in the dark & Gothic ever go together?

I was gonna ask why Nightmare Before Christmas wasn't #1, or anywhere else on the list, but then I remembered, even before they addressed it, that it wasn't directed by Tim Burton, and that the movies that made the list only count if he directs them. And of course, they confirmed my answer.

I'm late to the party here, but 100% agree with this list. Big Fish is one of my all time favorite movies. It's beautiful, well crafted, amazing actors, and hits every single note it was trying to play for us.
Every frame is exactly what it needs to be. The colors are exactly what they need to be. The stories told are fantastic when combined with the narrative of a strained father and son relationship.
And that ending... just... I can never not cry while watching it. It's beautiful.
Burton has never made a better movie and unfortunately I think he hit his peak here. He's been meh ever since. Corpse Bride has grown on me over the years and Sweeny Todd is worth watching now and then, but it's not required viewing.
Sleepy Hollow deserves high praise though. It's also exactly what it was supposed to be. It's just that it was a perfect recreation of a small and relatively obscure genre film type.
Anything else he has created since though? Meh, at best, and with the exception of the pink elephants scene I want nothing to do with his remake of Dumbo.

I love Corpse Bride. My god is it beautiful. Every detail is accounted for. And it’s touching with an interesting message. You may not always love someone at first, but being willing to get to know them and sacrifice is a huge part of marriage. Elfman is on point with his usual brand of off-beat music. The only part of the movie that is weaker is the obvious bad guy. I watch this often and you can always find new details. There’s so much love in it’s making.

Batman Returns will always be my favorite from his. Favorite Christmas movie too.
The movie does what the Dark Knight did not. Tell a story through it's visuals. You get and understand the Penguins backstory in 2 mins without dialogue. You see Penguin holding his pocket watch in the sewers, telling us as the viewer that it's his time. Little things like that adds to the story. Everytime I see it I witness something new. I just don't get that from other movies.
Plus, it is violent in it's own right. How many live action Batman movies do you see a severed hand? I can go on all day. Lol

If my icon on numerous sites is my indication it is definitely Sleepy Hollow that is my favorite, after has everything, it's a homage to classic Hammer era horror movies, it's got adorable Christina Ricci and also Christopher Walken with sharp teeth. If Superman Lives hadn't ended up as a 'Doomed' movie we would have also seen Chris Walken as Brainiac.

Everyone disagreeing with number one, have you seen Big Fish? I only ask that because I know it is very underrated and unknown. That movie is honestly a masterpiece and no doubt is his best film. The ending makes me cry every time I watch it, the production design is gorgeous, the acting incredible, it has layers and layers of content (unlike most of Burtons films which, let's face it, are pretty style over substance) I can't imagine anyone having seen Big Fish not putting it at the top spot.

A *lot* of hardcore Lugosi fans /hated/ Burton's biopic of Ed Wood, when it first came out, thinking that some scenes were too comedic, or since it wasn't written with 100% accuracy, it shouldn't have happened. What those older critics missed was that 1) it's not a Lugosi biopic, it's an Ed Wood biopic, and 2) Burton was trying to show Wood's friendship with Lugosi (and others who he worked with!) through Wood's eyes, and Wood saw Bela as a sweet man who he both admired and felt deep compassion for. Was that an accurate picture of Lugosi? Of course not, but it's how Wood saw Lugosi; when that first "Eddy, help me," telephone call happens, and Wood realises Bele is a morphine addict and it breaks your heart to see him strung out and lying on the floor, you feel that heartbreak because that's what Wood felt at that moment.
There are still Lugosi "experts" who feel that either Wood was barely friends with Lugosi, or that Wood was exploiting his friendship with Lugosi so that his films would break even, and there might be an element of truth to that, but Wood saw Bela as one of his dearest friends, and he believed that giving Bela work in his cheesey movies was helping out a friend.
And yeah, the other thing that historical purists point out is that the conversation with Welles at Boardners never happened; BUT, it was based on a fantasy of Wood's that his widow told Burton about, and he decided to put it in the film, to give Wood that little tribute.
Yeah, it's certainly one of Burton's greatest films. Burton put so much love into it, and Depp chewed the scenery up in ways that Willem Dafoe can only dream of - and certainly in ways absolutely fitting of a Wood film! It's not just one of Burton's best, it's probably one of the greatest biopics ever made, because it really seemed to have this understanding of the person whose story they were telling that guided exactly what to keep real, and what to play around with.

Sleepy Hallow is my favorite Tim Burton film. I'm probably the only one but I just love the overall look, sets, and creepy aesthetic. And so many of the supporting actors are brilliant classical actors and not to mention Christopher Walken as the headless horseman. I really appreciate the nostalgia critic talking about this film and giving some a new perspective on it.
