Way too many to count, simply because LotR is both one of my favourite movie series and book series (cannot count how often I've seen/read them by now).
Though if I had to pick, Boromir's last stand, Sam's speech at the end of TTT and Théoden's rally at the Pelennor Fields ("DEATH!") are some of the most memorable ones (and the scenes with Théoden on the fields are among those few that make me choke up every time).
Then again: The entire Pelennor Fields scene ist just awesome, awe inspiring and beautiful, with Théoden, Éomer and Éowyn taking center stage for much of it.

I’m not a huge fan of this list: I found the ent scenes cringe inducing in the theater, and I generally skip them on rewatches. Your number one, however, is flawless, and is one of my favorite scenes in movie history, from the moment they leave Balin’s tomb until Aragorn rounds up the Fellowship before they can get past the shock of losing Gandalf and begin grieving.
My list would be (Kind of a cheat since I already shared my #1, so this is more 6-2):
5.) Fight on Weathertop: It is the moment where we see that Aragorn is more than ‘Strider,’ but able to fight off 5 Nazgul himself. I also loved how the 3 other Hobbits were foolish enough to make a fire, but all tried to protect their friend from the Ring Wraiths.
4.) From the attempt to pass snowy Caradhras until the Fellowship enters Moria. We have several revealing character moments: Frodo loses the Ring and Boromir picks it up. We see that Boromir is tempted (though from a noble position of wanting to protect Gondor), and that Aragorn is fully behind Frodo, even resting his hand on his sword hilt in case Boromir doesn’t do the right thing. Then the scene in front of the door of Moria, where the moon lights the Ithildin, is just the peerless world building that Tolkien is famous for, as it hints at a world that is thousands of years old.
3.) Frodo, Sam, and Gollum pass Minas Morgul, which sends up its beacon. The scene shows the stakes, and includes Gandalf’s touchingly putting his arm on Pippin’s shoulder to comfort him.
2.) Theoden inspires the Rohirrim before they charge at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and then after their charge succeeds, the realization that the Haradrim were simply attacking with more forces - and olyphants - anyway.
1.) Everything from Boromir’s fall in trying to take the ring until his redemption and death.

  • Isiloron
    Isiloron 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

One of my favorite moments is the "lighting of the beacons" scene. It is mainly for the music and feeling of hope returning. I know that in the book a rider carries a symbolic red arrow to Rohan to call for aid. But I find the beacons more fitting for the movies. It is more visually interesting.

I really love the moment between Merry and Pippin after the Pelennor Fields battle.
I can't remember if it's in the extended cut or not, but Merry says, "Are you going to leave me?" and Pippin responds, "No, Merry, I'm going to look after you." I just feel like this epitomizes Pippin's character development. And the fact that Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd are still best friends to still day makes it even more powerful when rewatching all these years later.

The #2 best moment in the video is actually my #2 "worst" (least good) moment in Lord of the Rings. I'm all for Eowen having her moment. But there is no rational explanation in the films for how the Witch King was killed. (Please let me know if I overlooked something in the films, or if Peter Jackson or another executive offered their own explanation!)
Overconfidence cannot be the sole explanation. He and the other Nazgul were set on fire by Aragorn at Weathertop. Within a couple days (if not under 12 hours), they completely recovered and were busy chasing Arwen and Frodo. But Aragorn is a man man, you say; surely that's how the Witch King didn't die. Well, all the Nazgul also survived Arwen's raging flash flood, which killed their horses. Arwen wasn't a man; she was a female elf. According to the prophesy, she should've had double the potential to kill the Witch King (cuz Eowen is of the race of men). But the Witch King survived Arwen. So, there must be some physical reason why. The books make it pretty clear -- Merry's blade was created centuries before to battle against the Witch King and his forces of Agmar (in northern Middle-earth). The film makes no mention of this. Ideally, Galadriel would've given Merry and Pippin swords that meets a similar description, and she would've mentioned that to them when the departed Lothlorien. Oh well.

I actually always considered number 2 one of the weakest moments in the entire series, The scene as a whole is good, and I do always like when the supposed weak or insignificant characters end up having the most impact, but that final exchange is so on-the-nose and clunky, that I can't watch it without cringing. "No man can kill me!" "I am no man! AAAAHHHHH!!!" Ugh.

  • Zodia195

I love this trilogy. Peter Jackson was basically able what others thought was impossible due the sheer size of this book series (even though it was originally one book lol). I still remember how they saved money by shooting all 3 at once and in one location. It's just a darn shame about what I heard about how the local Kiwis who worked on the trilogy were treated.
    5. My fav moment of Twin Towers. 2nd fav moment was the arrival of the elves to help out Rohan. Heck even I was shocked to see that. Of course the other highlight was anything with Gandalf.
    4. I liked this part, but would never put it in my favs. That said his actor did an awesome job and I was over the moon when he returned in the first Hobbit Movie (one of the few parts I enjoyed since I don't like the franchise as a whole).
    3. This part made me sad and I can't watch him getting hit, but I did love his words before he died.
    2. I watched Rankin and Bass's version of Return of the King and one of my fav moments was Eowyn's fight with this guy. So needless to say I was looking forward to this moment. I found the wording very clever lol. This was definitely an awesome moment. If I did a Top 10 moment list, most of my favs would be from the 3rd movie.
    1. For me this IS the saddest moment so I wouldn't put it on here. I loved this char even as a kid with his portrays in those animated features by Ralph Bakshi and Rankin/Bass so him seemingly die here made me cry because I didn't see it coming.
My fav moment of the Trilogy and this is a big segment was from when the Ring is destroyed to the ending. Also I loved how the Battle of Gondor ended, when Pippin lights that fire ending with Rohan answering the call, Feremir and Eowyn's romance (wish that wasn't a deleted scene), whole process of Sam saving Frodo from the spider and the goblins (the line, "And that's for my own temper!" cracks me up every time lol.), and all the interactions between Ghibli, Aragon, and Legolas.

What I found interesting about the Witch King of Angmar's defeat is that saying "no man can kill me" in a world like Middle Earth isn't saying much. My immediate thought was "Well, there's at least one woman. If he means the race as a whole, then there are also hobbits, elves, dwarves, those undead ghost guys fighting with Aragorn...he's really not all that safe!"

I would change the "I am no man" one for the speech of Theoden before the charge in the same battle. To see a king that was teached to have faith above logic in Helms Deep to put his new knowledge to use and lead his men to a battle they know to be lost from the start... chanting DEATH as they brand the banner of their house while knowing none could possibly come out alive. That is a true Best Lord of the Rings Trilogy Moments.

I feel like this list was rushed out and not very thought out. They're too many awesome moments to count than condensing it to only 5-and you put Boremir's death as one of them. Don't get me wrong it is an emotional scene but its not top 5 worthy. Why not top 5 for every movie. Also you messed up on Theoden's relation to Eiowyn. I noticed your using still frames of Gollum from The Hobbit (the blue eyes give it away) it feels like none of you actually did any work and it shows. And this is coming from someone who likes the two female leads more than Walter. These segments has been on the cusp of being a Watch Mojo entry that I wish I didnt have this on my subscription feed and could filter it out.

There are way too many to name. But just to point out there was much more to Eowyn being able to kill the Witch King, when he says "no man can kill me" he doesn't mean male vs female. Literally no one could kill him because he was bound to the ring through Sauron. When Merry stabs him, the dagger he uses is actually a special dagger meant to break the connection between the Nazgul and the Ring, and it does just that. So, Merry stabs him, breaks his connection to the ring, and then Eowyn is able to kill him. Merry could have killed him at that point, or anyone else. Eowyn just happened to be fighting him and struck the final blow.

Theoden is Eowyn’s uncle, not her father. Not Sam’s speech, or the crowds bowing in Minas Tirith? 5 seems like too few.

The charge of the Rohirrim during the battle of Pelennor Fieldd has always been my favorite! I get goosebumps everytime 😍
But it's hard to choose only one scene in these movies.... They are awesome all the way through!
