Recess: School's Out - Disneycember

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 12 ธ.ค. 2018
  • The show struck a chord with kids everywhere, but the movie may have a harder time getting a larger audience. Doug takes a look at Recess: School's Out.
Recess: School's Out is a 2001 American animated comedy film based on the Disney television series Recess. It was produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Walt Disney Television Animation and Walt Disney Television Animation Digital Production with animation done by Sunwoo Animation and Sunwoo Digital International. The film also serves as the show's season five finale.

This may sound crazy, but other than the super evil villain, its the same as the show. Right down to the missed joke opportunities. It really just seems like a nostalgia trip.

Joke's on this film, the primary school I volunteer at doesnt have any recess or breaks anymore, apart from a half an hour lunch, so I guess the villain won in the end. Though I dont know how it affects test scores, it just seems to make bored, fidgety kids act out more and makes the teachers have more mental breakdowns. For anyone wondering where the heck this is it's the North of England, where we barely get any resources because the South only cares about the South. Plus the once outstanding school I volunteer in got beaten into being an academy by being starved of resources altogether, and the main point of academies is to fail so the business owning them gets more payouts... I've seen academy owners get prestigious business awards for doing that. Honestly home schooling is way better at this point if the parents have the time...

Never watched the show as a kid. I was too spoiled by Gargoyles and Batman and other whizz-bang-flash action shows with slick animation and badass character designs.

18 years after this movie was made and about 10 years after my parents and I cleaned out the video collection, and I _still_ own my VHS copy of "Recess: School's Out". One of my favorite movies growing up, and now all it does is make me cry.

    How I would've written a Recess movie:
    1. Write a Hogan's Heroes series finale.
    2. Translate it to Recess.
Recess was actually based on Hogan's Heroes. The theme song follows the same basic melodic tune, the characters are (mostly) parodies of the HH characters, and they even have an episode where TJ meets a Hogan expy who talks about his time in a POW camp and the pranks he and his group of buddies pulled on the commandant. A Recess movie could be the HH finale fans never got--and it could be really good. I always thought Klink's eyes would be opened to the atrocities Hitler was committing in WWII, and he would eventually side with Hogan to put a stop to it. A similar situation could've been set up for the Recess movie.

there's a few great things that Doug didn't really mention, 1. the music. it's actually brilliant, specifically using a 60s motif to tie both into the flashbacks and memories of Prickly while also summoning a generally nostalgic sense with a slight touch of melancholy to a lot of it. 2. the atmosphere. it really gets into the spirit of these kids and their summer,

Thing is, the movie is the series finale (Apart from some weird Lilo & Stitch episode crossover years later), they kinda wanted to go big for it.
The show is about these kids and the rest of the school having this strange social structure that is confined to the recess playground, as well as learning lessons on stuff like politics and economy through kid's stuff (A sixth grader is treated like a king and there's clear class disctinctions among the other kids; the playground's economy, which is managed by a group of kids in trenchcoats who sell worthless crap, operates on stickers, and it all goes on under the nose of the most strict teacher Miss Finster and her sidekick), in one episode the most popular guy is "banished" to the nerd classroom and befriends the geeks and it's all framed in a very mysterious way, in another the tough girl is found out to be called "Ashley" and forced to join the local socialites as per the recess' constitution; one episode is basically a film noire about the smart girl becoming a criminal while searching for her stolen pocket pc, and yet another one is about the entire playground following a fad and getting horrible haircuts from the protagonists, who have just decided to become hairdressers.
There's also the odd episode that's more grounded in reality and focused on humanizing the characters, particularly the teachers who at the start of the series are basically villainous strawmen but eventually grow to be very close to the main gang, particularly the principal with TJ and Finster with Spinelli.

I think Doug would like the show better than the movie. The show's humour is a lot more fast-paced and witty. The movie has wit, but it's hard to sustain the show's pace over the course of an 83-minute movie. So I get how, out of context, it might not work.

For me - personally - the saving moment of the movie was the ending when Principal Prickley sends TJ and his friends off to play and watches them go while Let the Sunshine in plays in the background.
Like he REMEMBERS when he was them - and he knows that adulthood is approaching for them - and while he's envious; he's also a little proud.
It's a good scene and - while not QUITE making up for the absurdity - still touches my old heart just a bit.

As a 11 or 12 years old kid I had a lot of good feelings about the movie. I remember I got a VHS as a present at the beginning of my summer holidays. And I was one of the few teenagers at my neighbourhood who didn't go to any summer camp. So, yeah, that was such a right-in-time movie, I re-watched it for... Something like 5 or 6 times. Watching this movie without first watching the TV show is like watching a season finale without first watching the show itself. I understand your lack of enjoyment, but the movie plays off the tv show the jokes, the emotional speach by prickley, even the impact of tj losing his friends to camps was very emotional because your Soo used to seeing all of them together, so when he's sad he's alone for the summer you actually feel that, at least for me I felt what tj felt. Overall the craziness is what made this movie work, because the tv show was so mature and filled with so much value.

Yeah, the show is what you wanted out of this. I like the movie, but you are right that it jumped to spy film out of nowhere. The show was more exaggerated slice of life, dealing with clicks, popularity, class photos, the patriarchy (really), and other kid related things. Never too outlandish, more a realistic fantasy of what kids wished school was like.

The villain doesn't want to get rid of RECESS, he wants to get rid of SUMMER VACATION by creating winter throught the summer (no summer = no summer vacation). Thus kids wouldn't spend several weeks lazily and instead would study more and America's education level would finally go up higher.

The show wasn't nearly as 'out there' as the movie. This felt like it needed some big plot to make for a big movie. The show, by contrast was about life for the kids in recess. Every recess was like a microcosm of the world at large. There were kids with distinct characteristics and personalities. The groups littering the playground were like a small society all their own.
And the lessons, such as they were sometimes, were valuable. I remember one where after an Injury, TJ isn't allowed to play outside until his arm heals, so he's sent to the room where all the kids who don't wish to go outside play. And on the way he hears a horror story of a kid in his same situation who went there and never came out. As it turns out TJ meets some extremely geeky kids who bring him into their world of DnD esq games and the like and he finds he has fun with them, and when his arm heals he invites them to join him outside for one recess and in doing so learns the new friend he made in there was the kid who went missing because he liked it so much. And in the end they agree that they each have their own worlds. And while TJ might visit theirs again someday, he prefers playing in the sunshine with his friends and leaves them to go back to their board games. It doesn't say all kids should get out and play, it simply acknowledged there are different social groups one can be a part of and each has it's own merits.

The show honestly was thought out and down to earth for it's audience and both kids and adults were written very well, and the humor and fun dumb stuff was great if you thought the character struggles were boring. It had it's fair share or WEIRD episodes that were as far fetched as this movie just in a shorter time [The Hall 9000 parody still makes me laugh]
